October/November 2021 Vacation Day 6 · · PAGE 12.
October 31 2021: Sunday begins at 8:21
AM with our departure from the motel with our
ride across town to the Niagara Falls State Park. I drove this route on
Google Earth weeks before the trip began. I wanted to see the scenic route that
is adjacent to the Niagara River before reaching the falls.
The motel had a nice breakfast. We got packed and started our day on
US 62 in front of the motel and went west to the intersection of NY route 265
that goes down toward the Niagara River.
NY route 384 runs on the north side of the
river and passed under I-190. On the west side of I-190, this entry ramp to the parkway goes directly to
the park at Niagara Falls.
The parkway comes in from the right side of this aerial image. There
is only one bridge for vehicles that has a big loop on the island to connect to
the roads on Goat Island.
This is where you turn right from the parkway to get to the overpass going to Goat Island
and Niagara Falls.
Exiting the parkway reveals this tourist street with a restaurant and more on
Buffalo Avenue. Turning right at this intersection takes us to first
avenue, the
overpass at the end of this block.
This is the overpass bridge to Goat Island and the sights of Niagara Falls we came here to
see and take pictures. We crossed this bridge at 8:43 AM going over to
Goat Island where the falls are located.
There is a pedestrian bridge crossing this part of the Niagara River going
to the American Falls. All those buildings and observation towers seen
here are on
the Canadian side of the river and Niagara Falls.
After crossing the bridge to Goat Island, these are the information signs
you will see as you get closer to the falls. We parked the car and turned
off the GPS with the last entry at 8:47 AM and walked across the street to the
real Niagara Falls.
Google Earth has a backpack camera system they use for places where their
camera vehicles cannot go. This crowd at the falls in July 2013 is where
the backpack gets it done.
This my first photo showing the tip of the Horseshoe Falls at Terrapin
point as seen on the second map near the top of this web page. October
31, 2021.
I changed the camera angle to get some of the buildings on the Canadian
side of the border. October 31, 2021.
I kept moving along the railing going upstream to get different camera angles of the
falls. October 31, 2021.
The railing and seating change as we move away from the falls. October
31, 2021.
The edge of the falls reminds me of the first sailors crossing the
Atlantic Ocean wondering if they would reach the end of the world and fall off
the edge. October
31, 2021.
I was amazed to find these rocks in the middle of the river with bushes
and small trees clinging to life. October 31, 2021.
One more view of the turbulence before reaching the granite cliff that
creates the Niagara Falls. October 31, 2021.
I accidentally got a view similar to the one you see in this image.
I tweaked the view angle and altitude to get this "Post Card View" of
Niagara falls. The American Falls are on the left and Horseshoe Falls are
on the right with the border between Canada and the USA dividing Horseshoe Falls
down the middle with the border going down the middle of the river on that side
of Goat Island. October 31, 2021.
This Google Earth image is along the exit road from the parking lot going
to the East end of Goat Island before getting to the Exit back across the bridge.
Here is the short cut exit across the middle of Goat Island to the
bridge. There is more to see by going straight through this intersection.
This area past the exit is a parking area and walkways to see the
"Three Sisters" islands on the south side of Goat Island.
Here is an aerial view showing the cross walk to "The Three
Sisters" islands on the south side of Goat Island.
Here is the east end of Goat Island and the exit via the bridge that
brought us over to see the falls. We left Niagara Falls State Park at 9:43
AM to start a long ride of 223 miles for today. That seems short compared
to our first two days on the road from home to East Ridge, Tennessee with our
second day to Kentucky and Ohio.
