May 20, 2004 - Moses Lake to Seattle, Washington
A familiar shape caught my eye on the street in Moses Lake across from the U.S.
post office. Somebody in the city had a good sense of humor about popular movie
mythology. No, it's not R2-D2, but he does a good job of cleaning up this place.
The sign at the bottom says: "Astrologically Created Droid by Carolann
Swartz, Chris Strange, J&M Electric, Inc., and Moses Lake Sheet Metal." Of
course, at the bottom it says: "May the Force Be With You."
Looking East at the corner of South Beech Street and West Third Street is the
post office and a typical small town American business district.
There is a rest area adjacent to the Columbia River on Interstate 90 about 39
miles west of Moses Lake. Other folks stopped to take a picture here or just to
stretch after a ride through the middle of Washington state.
This is the bridge taking I-90 across the Columbia River just few miles from
the overlook above, near the village of Vantage, Washington.
Roslyn, Washington (a.k.a. Cicely, Alaska)
If you go another 56 miles westward toward Seattle, you come to the town of
Cicely, Alaska er, uh, I mean Roslyn, Washington. This was the scenic little
town used in the CBS television sitcom "Northern Exposure" a few years ago.
The town is still here, and so are some of the locations used for exterior shots.
Do you remember seeing the moose walking in front of this cafe? On the TV
show, the sign had an apostrophe and a little "s" added to it to read
"Roslyn's Cafe" in the show's credits.
The vantage point for the shot above is directly in front of this famous
building. Doctor Joel Fleishman's office is now a gift shop selling a lot of
Northern Exposure memorabilia and collectibles. The name of the gift shop adds to
the illusion of the fictitious town of Cicely, Alaska.
And there is "Chris in the morning on K-bear" on this poster in the gift
shop window. There is more of Cicely, Alaska and this neat tourist town on the NEXT PAGE.
